What Is Breast Engorgement?

After giving birth, around 2–3 days later, your breasts may become full, soft, and firm. Your nipples may appear flattened, and your breasts may enlarge, even extending toward the armpits. You may also experience a slight fever. This happens when your milk begins to “come in”. Breast engorgement can make you feel sore and uncomfortable, but it is not dangerous and usually improves quickly. To reduce discomfort, you should express some breast milk by hand or use a breast pump before breastfeeding. Applying a warm compress or taking a warm shower can also help relieve pain and help you feel more relaxed while feeding your baby.
