Causes of Male Infertility

Male fertility depends on the normal function of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which are responsible for controlling the production of male sex hormones, as well as the proper function of the testes. Factors that may prevent a man from being able to achieve pregnancy with his partner include: Abnormalities of the testes such as inflammation or infection, and varicocele (enlarged veins in the scrotum), which is found in 30–40% of cases. Obstruction of the sperm ducts, which is found in 10–20% of cases. Abnormalities of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which are found in 1–2% of cases. Unexplained abnormalities, where the cause cannot be identified, are found in 40–50% of cases.
